TEFL Course

This three-week course is operated by one of Thailand’s leading TEFL providers once awarded Best TEFL Provider in Thailand by the Ministry of Education. At the end of the three weeks participants will walk away with an internationally recognized TEFL certificate that will allow you to teach English as a foreign language anywhere in the world.

The course involves 140 hours of in-class instruction followed by 18 hours of hands-on experience in the classroom. There are fourteen units, with each unit carefully selected to offer the most relevant and useful teaching methods for future teachers. Whether it is practical insight into what works and what doesn’t in the classroom, or the latest theories from applied linguistics, this TEFL training sets the standard in the industry.

The program is a fun, interactive experience with most nights & weekends free to explore (and party) in Chiang Mai. Travellers will have plenty of time to socialise with the many other teachers on the course, and participate in the excursions, treks, and immersions trips included in the experience.

However, as this is an intensive course, participants are expected to apply themselves to the TEFL training program, and to make an effort to participate in all activities & tasks required. Assessment includes multiple quizzes, a final project, final exam & 18 hours of observed teaching practice.

Course Units

This introductory unit provides you with essential information on teacher edict, teaching environments and what is expected during the course
English has a complicated system of rules and exceptions for its syntax. Part of the complexity arises from its history. A basic understanding of why the language operates the way it does is essential.

Researchers have been trying to find the golden method of language learning for a long time. This unit will take a look at some of the insights gained from applied linguistic research with regards to learning a foreign language.

Managing student behavior is at the forefront of any teachers’ priorities. Without successful managerial skills, hindrances to teaching are exacerbated. We place great importance on the ability to successfully manage student behavior.

Understanding what motivates learners is critical to managing their behavior. In this unit we uncover the myriad reasons, both individual and societal, that motivate students to learn.

There are many different ways of teaching, and, furthermore, each teacher brings his/her own personality to the classroom. In order to be an effective teacher, one needs to have an understanding of learning behaviour.

Differences in learning styles can be found between students of different ages or skill level. We will illustrate ways of making adjustments with regards to these factors.

Keeping students motivated, and tailoring your presentation to suit their learning styles is crucial. Overtly correcting may inhibit students to try, while too lax an attitude may confuse and disorient. We encourage learning through discovery.

Much of your time as a teacher will be dedicated to teaching new vocabulary items. We will cover different ways of teaching vocabulary, strategies for selecting appropriate words, and applicable activities for reinforcement.

These represent very sensitive topics in the TEFL setting. Theories on different methods of teaching, as well common hindrances will be covered.

Planning and delivery of lesson content is the cornerstone to TEFL training. The course focuses more on the practical element of presenting lessons and how to systematically deliver them.

When teaching any language; knowledge of the structure of the language is essential. This chapter will dedicate some time to grammar instruction and the different ways in which grammar can be presented in the classroom.

A major part of language learning is learning how to read and listen. This chapter explores various reasons for reading and listening, and the different ways these skills can effectively be taught in the classroom.

Mastery of speaking and writing skills are also essential in order to be considered a successful communicator. This chapter looks at different conventions that govern these areas, and takes a look at different ways of teaching these skills.

About Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, also affectionately known as ‘the rose of the north’, is situated in Northern Thailand 700km north of the capital city of Bangkok. The city is a study in vibrant contrasts and is every bit the bustling tourist city as it is the sleepy country town. Here ancient temples converge with trendy bars, hotels and restaurants for a very real east meets west vibe.

Old town Chiang Mai is unique in its own right. The moat-encircled old city retains much of the fortified wall that once protected the city center as well as the four main gates that provided access to the former Lanna capital city. How many other places in the world can you hop between cosmopolitan bars, clubs & restaurants set amongst some of Thailand’s most historically important ancient temples? Partner this with arguably South-East Asia’s best night markets & you have a cultural-hub teeming with things for even the most adventurous of travellers.

Its northern location also means travelers are only a short motorcycle drive or TukTuk trip away from pristine rainforests, ethnic hill tribes, mountain treks, rock climbing & elephant sanctuaries. What better place for adventurers to begin their teaching career abroad!
